I was bitten sometime Saturday while hiking in the woods. I noticed I had a very itchy bite on my foot when going to sleep Saturday night. Sunday I kept stopping to shake my boot out. I had tucked in my pants to protect from ticks and thought something was falling into my boot. I hiked about 5 miles carrying a pack. After a hot shower Sunday afternoon, a blister about the size of a pencil eraser appeared. Four days later the blister has grown to a size slightly larger than a dime and full like a grape. It feels like a slow burn. The blister is still intact but is very sensitive. I'll keep the board posted. DAY 5. Blister is now bigger than a quarter. It burns and tingles but pain is minimal. Trying to drink lots of water and take a multi-vitamin, plus extra C and B
DAY 7. Blister is larger than 1/2 dollar and taller than 5 quarters stacked up. I am questioning if it is a BRS bite, but for all my research, that is all that fits the profile. I have had some mild systemic symtoms, insomina, tiredness, anxiety (Ha,ha), slight shortness of breath. All have been very mild and I am still treating at home with Benadyl, rest, cold salt water soaks, and plantain poultice. I also clean the area very well with alcohol and keep it covered with a clean white sock, waiting for the blister to burst.
DAY 10. The blister has held steady for 2 days. I have been more diligent about the cool salt watersoaks and poultice. I am also using Aloe gel. I have felt better the past 2 days, but over did things yesterday trying to catch up from a week on the couch. I have no idea what will happen when the blister bursts.
Blister Opened: Day 10 The blister opened this evening. Even after 10 days of looking at pictures, I wasn't really ready for what was under the blister. I am sure it was a Brown Recluse spider bite. I cut off the dead blister skin and cleaned with Hydrogen peroxide. I then put a Zimm's wound treatment (a collagen product) and bandaged it well. I plan to continue every 6 hours for a few days. I was able to set off fire works with my children for the 4th. I was sore after, and have some trouble walking. Still drinking lots water and a multi-vitamin. Good nutrition in general.
Day 11. Wound looks nasty, but okay. I has a nasty white crater with a very red outer ring and some black spots. I am Ceaning with hydrogen peroxide diluted to 1/2 strength with boiled salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt per cup H2O) I let the water cool in the pan with the lid on. Wash my hands well. I am trying to keep it clean, clean, clean. I have a syringe and use it to squirt the solution on/ in the lesion. I carefully clean around the wound with alcohol and a Q-tip. Don't get the alcohol in the wound! It hurts when you do but you can rinse it with the H2O2. I use a small piece of gauze, soaked in the solution and hemostats to gently clean the area and remove gunk. Next a capful of full strength Hydrogen peroxide. I alternate from here. One dressing, I use the Zim's Wound Care. I goop it on from the tube to cover the wound. Then 3, 4x4 gauze pads. I hold this in place Secure-Flex Wrap. This is much better than tape and can be reused if it doesn't get dirty. The next dressing change, I put a some roll gauze, soaked in full strength hydrogen peroxide in the wound, then dress as above. I plan 3 dressing changes a day for the next couple of day. I still have some fear but so far nothing has been worse than I can handle although it is hard to believe I have been basically house bound for 11 days. I am a teacher so I am off work. I can't imagine if this happened durning school. I feel for those of us that have that added stress. These bite are shocking. I am an avid backpacker that uses a tarp rather than a tent. I bet I have had a thousand bug bites, 25, tick bites, and 50 spider bites. I had 3 other spider bites from this trip that itched, got a little red and healed. I just didn't worry about bites. I am just shy of aracnaphobic right now.
DAY 14. I have quit using Hydrogen peroxide and just use the Zim's. Today I put on a Hydrocolloidal dressing. It stays on a few days. I have found everything at the local grocery store here in New Albany. I feel the wound is healing nicely. I don't have much pain and I can walk around normally.
